Tonight is the Super Bowl 44 Showdown between the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts, and it appears that the snowstorm's aftermath may have an impact not just on the game itself, but perhaps even the turnout at taverns and sports pubs likely to be broadcasting the game tonight. The game gets underway at 6:25pm on Armstrong Channel 2. Yesterday in the NHL, the Pittsburgh Penguins played a disappointing game, even by the players' own admissions. Left winger Matt Cooke said that having four days off might have shared the blame in that 5-3 defeat against the Montreal Canadiens. It was their second loss in their last five games. After the game, the Pens flew to Newark and then boarded a bus for Washington, DC for today's showdown between the Washington Capitals. Face-off is at noon, and you can hear that game on AM 680 WISR. In local college basketball action, Mercyhurst College outscored visiting Slippery Rock University by a 40-19 margin in the final 14 minutes Saturday to record a 71-58 win in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division men’s basketball action. The Lakers trailed by a 39-31 margin before they went on the decisive run. Saturday’s point total was the lowest of the season for The Rock, who entered the game ranked fourth in the PSAC in scoring offense at 80.6 points per game. The loss was the third straight and eighth in the last 11 games for The Rock after a school-record 10-0 start to the season. The Rock, which suffered its third straight loss and eighth in the last 11 games after a school-record 10-0 start to the season, will look to end the skid Wednesday when they return to Erie for a 7:30pm division game against Gannon in the Hammermill Center. The Green and White must win Wednesday’s game to have a realistic shot at earning a second straight trip to the conference playoffs. The winter storm also affected the Grove City College athletic schedule for the weekend. All three events scheduled for Saturday have been postponed due to weather conditions and issues related to the weather. Grove City's home swimming and diving meet with Bethany has been postponed. A makeup date and time have not been set yet. Grove City's Presidents' Athletic Conference basketball doubleheader at Bethany has also been postponed until Monday evening. Start times have not been established for the doubleheader. Numerous other events on the conference schedule have been rescheduled due to the storm. Thiel and Waynesburg have moved their basketball doubleheader to Monday night. The Westminster at Chatham women's basketball game has been postponed also. Chatham's home swim meet with Saint Vincent and Penn State Altoona is postponed, as is Westminster's swimming dual meet at Mount Union. The bad weather didn't stop the Pitt Panthers yesterday from delivering a sound 83-58 thrashing of Seton Hall at Petersen Events Center, despite The Pete being half-empty; a casualty of the weekend snowstorm. The Panthers are off until tomorrow, when they play host to Robert Morris for an 8pm tip.
