The chances of the Pittsburgh Penguins repeating as Stanley Cup Champions just got much more complicated. The Atlanta Thrashers have been rumored to be looking to trade their top player and one of the best wingers in the game today, Ilya Kovalchuk and yesterday, they did it. The Atlanta Thrashers sent left winger Ilya Kovalchuk and defenseman Anssi Salmela to the New Jersey Devils Thursday night for right winger Niclas Bergfors, defenseman Johnny Oduya, prospect Patrice Cormier and a 2010 first-round pick. The teams also swapped second-round picks this year. Kovalchuk, 26, set to become an unrestricted free agent July 1, turned down the Thrashers' 12-year, $101 million extension offer. The Pittsburgh Penguins had been rumored to be in the talks to Kovalchuk, but his salary this season would have placed the Pens over the salary cap requirements. The Pens take on the Canadiens this Saturday afternoon at 2.
