Two different hits could cause suspensions in two different sports that were broadcast on the Butler County Radio Network Sunday. Pittsburgh Penguins Matt Cooke's hit on Boston Bruins star Mark Savard knocked Savard out on the ice and out of the game. Although Pens head coach Dan Bylsma said Cooke's hit was not intentional, and no penalty was called, the NHL is meeting this week regarding such hits.
Carl Edwards was knocked out of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race early in Atlanta Sunday after tangling with Brad Keselowski. He later returned more than a hundred laps down, and wrecked Keselowski with five laps to go in the race. Keselowski's car flipped violently upside down into the wall. He was running in the top 10 at the time. Edwards was parked for the remaing laps by NASCAR and was called to a meeting with NASCAR officials after the race and admitted he did it intentionally. Further sanctions could be announced Tuesday afternoon.
On Monday night's "Fast Talk" program on WBUT, former driver Kyle Petty called for NASCAR to suspend Edwards for a race. Petty said Edwards move was foolish, pre-meditated and uncalled for on a track where speeds reach over 190 miles per hour. NASCAR officials announced a hands-off policy for this season, saying drivers would police themselves, but may be forced to act due to safety concerns from this incident. |

The Pittsburgh Pirates played a pair of 'split squad' games Monday afternoon, and dropped both contests. The Bucs lost their second game of the early pre-season to the New York Yankees Monday afternoon, this time 6-0. Pirate starter Paul Maholm allowed two runs on three hits and two walks. Maholm had one strikeout in his first two-inning outing of the spring. The Buccos managed only one hit against the Yanks. Steve Pearce singled in the fifth inning. The Pirates and Yankees meet again Tuesday afternoon. C C Sabathia will make his second start of the pre-season for New York. The Pirates counter with Charlie Morton.
In the second split-squad game Tampa Bay edged the Pirates 4-3 in 10-innings. The game featured Pirates' prospects Pedro Alvarez and Jose Tabata, who combined for the Bucs first run. Tabata tripled to right field, and Alvarez followed with an rbi-single. Alvarez also had a triple in the seventh, and scored on Brian Friday's home run.
Another Pirate prospect, Brad Lincoln made his second appearance of the spring, and the 24-year-old right-hander allowed one run on two hits and three walks while striking out one in two innings. Lincoln is considered the organization's best pitching prospect and has an outside chance at earning the fifth spot in the rotation if he has a stellar spring. |

The Pittsburgh Steelers were very active signing free agents Monday. The Steelers also signed the pair of free agent players who visited Monday. The most surprising was safety Ryan Clark inking a four-year $14 million deal. Both players are special team stand-outs and have signed three-year deals. Safety Will Allen, a 4th round draft pick in 2004 from Ohio State, and a six-year pro, was Tampa Bay's special team captain in 2008. He missed most of the Buccaneers season in 2009 due to injury. The Steelers also signed wide receiver Arnaz Battle, who played seven seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. Last season he was their primary punt returner. Battle was a sixth-round draft pick out of Notre Dame in 2003.
The Steelers may not be finished either. Reportedly former wide receiver Antwaan Randle-El will visit today and may sign a contract to return. Randle-El was released by Washington last week. The Steelers also have reached an agreement with offensive lineman Jonathon Scott. Scott started eight games with Buffalo last season. |

In the NFL, police say they probably won't have anything new to say until tomorrow concerning the latest sexual assault accusations against Pittsburgh Steelers star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Charges still have yet to be filed against Roethlisberger, just several months after allegations surfaced of him assaulting a hotel worker at a casino Harrah's Hotel and Casino in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. No charges have been filed in that incident. Roethlisberger is accused of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old coed at Georgia College and State University early Friday morning after a night of partying in the college town of Milledgeville, about 80 miles southeast of Atlanta.
Today in auto racing, Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be on the pole for the first time in nearly two years today for NASCAR's Sprint Cup Kobalt Tools 500 race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, giving the popular, second-generation driver another reason to believe that he's left behind the most dismal season of his career. Kyle Busch will start from the outside of the front row, beating out Juan Pablo Montoya and Mark Martin. Jeff Gordon was fifth, giving Hendrick Motorsports three of the top five spots. You can hear all the action from Atlanta coming up after the noon news on AM 1050 WBUT.
