Congressman John Murtha Dies Print E-mail

One of the nation's most powerful lawmakers from Pennsylvania has died.

Congressman John Murtha of Johnstown, died today at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Virginia after battling complications from gallbladder surgery he had last month.  He went back in the hospital to address those complications last week, and was listed in critical condition.  However, his condition was upgraded to stable over the weekend before he took a turn for the worst today.

Murtha began his congressional career in 1974, when the Marine Corps Reserves officer became the first Vietnam War combat veteran elected to Congress.  Over a period of two decades, Murtha became especially powerful as a ranking Democrat of the House subcommittee that oversees Pentagon spending, and used that power to bring a very large number of high-tech jobs to southwestern Pennsylvania, many of them for defense contractors.

Murtha also published his memoirs six years ago..."From Vietnam to 9/11".  Ironically, he has been an outspoken critic of the Iraq War, accusing Marines of murdering Iraqi civilians in Haditha.  Those words and his comments about "racist" voting tendencies of western Pennsylvanians were used against him in his 2008 re-election bid, but nonetheless, he succeeded in winning his 19th term in Congress.

Murtha is survived by his wife Joyce, their three adult children, and grandchildren.
