The Obama Administration has set aside $17 million in the 2011 budget for cleanup efforts of a former nuclear waste dump site in Armstrong County. According to today's issue of the Valley News Dispatch, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers expects this spring to start prepping the site along River Road in Parks Township, between the boroughs of Vandergrift and Leechburg. 50,000 tons of radioactive materials are expected to be removed in the spring, but large-scale removal, involving the actual removal of contaminants, won't likely happen until early next year. The total cleanup project cost is $76 million and will likely take three years to complete.
