A Ross Township police officer with 27 years on the force has been accused of growing marijuana.
According to Channel 11 News, Ross Township police Officer Richard White said he was forced to resign for tending to a marijuana plant he discovered last month. The plant was discovered after police conducting a routine exercise with drug dogs found the plant in a wooded area. Police set up surveillance cameras, which reportedly captured White, on duty in his uniform, watering the plants.
The 58-year-old White said while on duty he found the 2-foot plant in a wooded area of Cemetery Lane and watered it once, and then destroyed the plant a week later. He added that he was forced out in a meeting with chief Ralph Freedman last week. White had planned to retire at the end of the year. The case has been turned over to the Allegheny County District Attorney's office.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers got an earful from residents of Parks Township last night regarding the cleanup of the site where a nuclear fuels plant once stood.
The Corps plans to clean up the former NUMEC nuclear and toxic waste dump site along Route 66 between Leechburg and North Vandergrift this spring. However, residents are asking corps officials to provide a comprehensive written emergency plan and more intensive air quality monitoring around the site, according to today's issue of the Valley News Dispatch.
Corps officials say they've been communicating with local first responders as far as local emergency contingency is concerned, and that process began in May with local fire chiefs. Other issues raised included the construction of a containment shelter as the waste trenches are uncovered, residential soil and well water testing to ensure it hasn't been contaminated, and increasing the number of air quality monitors.
Another meeting between residents and corps officials will take place in the spring before the project begins. |

Authorities in Beaver County aren't giving up their search for a woman who disappeared three years ago.
Karen Adams, of Independence Township, left Mountainer Casino, Racetrack and Resort in West Virginia early on the morning of March 12, 2007, and never returned home. According to Channel 11 News, authorities used cell phone records to determine that Adams checked her voicemail at about 4:30 that morning near Steubenville, Ohio. Her credit cards and bank account have not been accessed since she disappeared.
Beaver County detectives say they'll search the route that the 54-year-old Adams would have driven home, in order to try and find her car. They said there are several ponds along the route that a car could have driven into and never have been seen. They intend to use sonar equipment in the ponds to try and locate it.
Emergency crews searched on the ground and from the air once learning of her disappearance, but never found any trace of her. |
