Republican state Senator Jane Orie's chief of staff was rigorously cross-examined today about a 2004 document that some staffers signed, saying they weren't to do campaign work during office hours and they wouldn't get comp time for doing so.
That witness, Jamie Pavlot, is testifying under a grant of immunity against Orie, who is charged with using her taxpayer-funded staff to do campaign work for herself and one of her sisters, state Supreme Court Justice Joan Orie Melvin.
According to the Associated Press, Pavlot testified that while she remembers the directive and having at least one staffer sign it, she said Thursday such rules were "very often broken and changed." She also testified that Orie's staff routinely did campaign work on state time and even earned comp time for doing so.
