The prosecution's star witness in the corruption trial of state Senator Jane Orie took the stand today.
Orie's former chief of staff, Jamie Pavlot, testified that the McCandless Republican tried to cover up campaign work being done by her taxpayer-funded staff after learning an intern had reported the activity to authorities in October of 2009. Pavlot testified that she was told by Orie to post a campaign sign on the window of a seldom-used office upstairs from her legislative office to make it appear as if it were the campaign headquarters of her sister, state Supreme Court Judge Joan Orie Melvin.
Pavlot also testified that Orie sent a handwritten letter to Jennifer Rioja, the intern who blew the whistle, and her professors at the University of Pittsburgh denying the presence of campaign work on state time.
Pavlot is the final witness for the prosecution. Defense attorneys could open their case tomorrow.
